Alyssa speaking on the radio about HIV/AIDS in Belize PROJECT AIDS MISSION STATEMENT: "Project AIDS" is a response to the growing epidemic of Aquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) that is stirring in our nation. Our vision is to launch a nation wide campaign to help the prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Project AIDS seeks to take an ABC Approach. ABC APPROACH: Abstinence, Being faithful to one, Changed Behavior and Lifestyle. RESEARCH: The Belize National Commission on AIDS reports Belize possesses the highest rate of HIV/AIDS cases per capita in Central America. The nation of Belize has a population of 270,000 with 55 percent comprised of youths 18 years old and younger. "According to UNAIDS it is estimated that there are 10,000 people infected with HIV in Belize with the majority being unaware of their condition," informs the Pan American Health Organization. HERITAGE: Project AIDS began from an intercessory time, with our spirits awakened and our eyes opened to see one of the greatest assignments of the enemy in our nation, AIDS. This epidemic is plaguing our nation, rapidly destroying the lives of thousands of young people. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Project AIDS is a response to the social problem affecting the hearts and lives of our people. Our vision is to launch a nationwide Campaign to help the prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS. We hope to inform and educate the public of this epidemic – stressing the reality and risk HIV/AIDS poses. "If people do not perceive themselves to be [at] risk, they are less likely to change their behavior, hence the problem of HIV/AIDS will continue to increase unless there is a major intervention to motivate behavior change" (Executive Summary, 6). MANDATE: AIDS cannot be ignored. Called to take a stand, our hope is to form a coalition of Belizean churches and leaders. Partnering together – with a heart for the people and our destiny as a nation – we will fight against the rampant spread of AIDS. MINISTRY: The heart of Project AIDS is to effect the next generation. Putting feet on our vision – a plan of action includes a national campaign launching full size billboards in every District, alongside highways and heavily populated areas. The message of Project AIDS will be taken into schools and to the public through a video presentation and media ads. Distribution of posters, flyers and booklets throughout the country will serve to educate and raise awareness.
